TRR 181 Seminar "Understanding Large-Scale Circulation Changes from A Local Energetic Perspective" by Prof. Dr. Christian Franzke (Pusan National University)

The TRR 181 seminar is held every other week in the semester and as announced during semester break. The locations of the seminar changes between the three TRR181 locations, but is broadcastet online for all members of the TRR.

The TRR 181 seminar is held by Prof. Dr. Christian Franzke (Pusan National University) on January 19, Bundesstr. 53 20146 Hamburg, room 22/23.

Understanding Large-Scale Circulation Changes from A Local Energetic Perspective

Abstract

Atmospheric motions are driven by transformation of energy from Available Potential Energy (APE) to Kinetic Energy (KE). Edward Lorenz was the first to develop a systematic framework for the atmospheric energy cycle, the Lorenz Energy Cycle (LEC). The LEC considers globally integrated energies. Here we use a locally defined APE to examine spatial changes in the energy cycle. We are able to close the local energy budget well. We find evidence for a tug of war between polar and tropical warming with respect to the jet stream changes. We also find evidence for significant long-term increases in APE and KE. An examination of strong storms shows that cross-scale interactions are important.
