Report - 6th Gravity Wave Workshop in Prague, Czech Republic by Bharath Krishnan

I am Bharath Krishnan, a doctoral researcher in subproject W6, “Spectral Energy Fluxes by Wave-Wave Interactions,” at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) in Kühlungsborn. My research focuses on mesoscale energy transfers in regional domains within the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). Various fundamentally different theories, ranging from gravity waves to stratified turbulence and wave-vortex interactions, have been proposed to explain the mesoscale dynamics. However, the role of gravity wave breaking and its associated energy transfers in the upper atmosphere remain relatively underexplored. To gain deeper insight into gravity wave dynamics and share my recent findings, I participated in the 6th Gravity Wave Workshop in Prague from August 24th to 26th.

The workshop was organized by the Gravity Wave group at Charles University, Prague, to bring together experts and early-career researchers investigating various aspects of gravity wave dynamics in the atmosphere. The event featured many insightful talks and poster presentations that I thoroughly enjoyed. I also presented my work as an oral presentation on “Mesoscale Energy Transfers in Regional Domains of Gravity-Wave Resolving Simulations.” It was inspiring to see experts from around the world focusing on this specialized field and sharing their latest findings. Since my research involves implementing a method to study mesoscale dynamics, it was particularly valuable to discover the different approaches others are using to analyze these processes from distinct perspectives.

Beyond the scientific sessions, my first visit to Prague was an unforgettable experience. I enjoyed trying a variety of delicious dishes while catching up with colleagues and making new friends. A real highlight was the evening boat cruise along the Vltava River; watching the sunset light up the city’s skyline, iconic landmarks, and its famous bridges, including the iconic Charles Bridge, was beautiful. Exploring the city on foot was just as special; strolling through Prague’s historic streets late at night under the warm, yellow glow of the streetlights gave the romantic city a magical feel. Overall, I had a wonderful time making new connections and soaking in the unique charm of Prague, and I will definitely be coming back.

I would like to thank the entire Gravity Wave group at Charles University for hosting such a wonderful event with a relaxed environment for informal yet productive scientific discussions. My thanks also go to everyone who provided valuable feedback and guidance both before and during the workshop. Furthermore, I would like to thank TRR 181 and IAP for funding my trip.
