Report - Eddy Wave Meeting 2026

From April 28th to 30th, 2026, around 50 international researchers met for three days at the Haus des Sports in Hamburg for the Eddy Wave Meeting 2026. The workshop brought together scientists working on eddies and waves in both the ocean and the atmosphere, spanning theory, modeling, and observations.

A core focus was the interaction between balanced eddies and internal and/or surface waves, including how these waves are generated and dissipated, why they matter for the global energy cycle, and how they can be parameterized in numerical or conceptual models. By connecting advances across oceanography, meteorology, geophysical fluid dynamics, and data science, the meeting fostered lively, cross-disciplinary discussions.

The keynote speakers were: Pascale Lelong (NorthWest Research Associates, USA) , Leo Maas ((Utrecht University, Netherlands), Julian Mak ((Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong), and Yasushi Fujwara (Graduate School of Maritime Sciences, Japan). In addition to keynote talks, the program featured a wide range of contributions and poster sessions exploring mechanisms of wave–eddy interactions, energy cascades, dissipation pathways, and diagnostics across scales.
