RTG Course: Spectral Analysis and Pattern Analysis

The course will take place on October 19-20, 2022

Lecturer: Jin-Song von Storch

When: October 19-20

Where: Hamburg

This is a topical workshop open to all TRR PhDs and postdocs.

Course description: This course introduces Spectral Analysis as an art to achieve the best estimates of (power-/ cross-) spectra in frequency domain and Pattern Analysis as an approach to optimally describing spatial co-variability. The course will start with an introduction to stochastic processes and to spectra as parameters of stochastic processes, followed by the concept of estimation and various methods used to estimate spectra. We will address questions, such as why these methods are needed, how they differ from each other, how to decide whether a spectral peak is statistically significant, and whether coherences between two time series are significantly different from zero.
