Art & Science Collaboration: Mural as a Showcase for Scientific Research

As part of our Art & Science project, which has produced many different artworks over the past years, we are now creating a large-scale mural in a public space that visually represents our entire research project. The mural is being created near our campus in Eimsbüttel, Hamburg, in collaboration with artists Holger Weißflog and Jakob Bardou from the Innerfields artist collective. It is the result of close cooperation with five scientists from the University of Hamburg and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research. The artwork highlights various fields such as mathematics, meteorology, and oceanography and invites viewers to see research from a new perspective.

The process was practice-oriented: in December, scientists explained their complex research in simple terms during an on-site meeting, allowing the artists to develop visual ideas. This was followed by several online meetings to refine the concept and ensure an accurate representation of the scientific content. The artists are now preparing for the painting phase.

The mural is inspired by a designed house façade at Eimsbüttler Chaussee 79-81, initiated by InUrFaCE (Initiative of Urban Facades Creature Exposition). This non-profit organization based in Cologne specializes in combining street art and scientific research to raise awareness of biodiversity. The mural depicts two majestic fieldfare birds framed by lush greenery, with the inscription “MAGISTRA,” highlighting the importance of protecting our natural heritage. This project illustrates how art can serve as a visual call to action, encouraging society to recognize and safeguard the invaluable biodiversity around us.

Like the new mural, it continues the ongoing dialogue between science and art to raise public awareness and promote social change. Both murals exemplify how accessible, public art can raise awareness of pressing issues like climate change and biodiversity loss.
