First meeting with our new TRR Mercator fellows in March planned

The meeting on 16th-17th, March 2021 is a follow up of the workshop on Un/Balanced Flow Decomposition Methodologies that we organized 2019 in Hamburg.

We are organizing a 2-day online meeting on eddies and internal waves on 16th-17th March 2021 within the framework of the Collaborative Research Center  TRR 181 on 'Energy Transfers in Atmosphere and Ocean'.

The meeting is a follow up of the workshop on Un/Balanced Flow Decomposition Methodologies that we organized 2 years ago in Hamburg. This time we extend the discussions to parametrizations of eddies and internal waves. The meeting will comprise of talks and discussions on the aforementioned topics and will take place in the afternoons (in the Central European Time (CET) zone). A short description of the meeting is below.

Confirmed speakers include the TRR181 Mercator fellows :

Laure Zanna (Courant Institute, US)
Jacques Vanneste (University of Edinburgh, UK)
David Marshall (University of Oxford, UK)
Kevin Lamb (University of Waterloo, Canada)

Eddies and Internal waves: Flow Decomposition and Parameterizations

This meeting aims at bringing together contributions in meteorology, oceanography and geophysical fluid dynamics, promote a cross-disciplinary interaction among mathematicians, meteorologists and oceanographers, and enhance our understanding of the interactions and energy transfers between meso-scale (balanced) eddies and (unbalanced) internal gravity waves.

Geophysical flows in the atmosphere and the ocean are characterized by rotation and stratification, which together give rise to two different modes: the low frequency balanced and the high frequency unbalanced motions. While the balanced state in geophysical flows describes the dynamics and energetics of the low frequency flow, the unique description and diagnosis of this balanced state remains conflicted. At the same time, the co-existing unbalanced motions also significantly influence the energetics of the flow,  however the identification and interpretation of the unbalanced motions, and the interaction between the modes and their consistent representation by parameterizations, continues to pose many open questions.

With this meeting, we intend to bring together the recent advancements in flow decomposition methodologies, wave and eddy parameterizations.

We invite talks and contributions to the meeting discussions. Please send your expression of interest to participate in the meeting (as a speaker or an attendee), by 25th February to Manita Chouksey.
