Open Positions at TRR181

The Collaborative Research Center TRR 181 "Energy transfers in Atmosphere and Ocean" invites applications for up to 27 PhD and 13 Research Associate positions.

TRR 181 is a collaborative project between the Universities Hamburg and Bremen (Germany) funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for initially four years with possible extension for eight years. Further participating institutions are Alfred-Wegener-Institut Bremerhaven, Jacobs University Bremen, Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie Hamburg, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde, and Leibniz-Institut für Atmosphärenphysik, Kühlungsborn.

Physical oceanographer, meteorologists and applied mathematician are working together in the project

  1. to understand the energy transfers between the different dynamical regimes - smallscale turbulence, internal gravity waves and geostrophically balanced motion - in both atmosphere and ocean,
  2. to develop, to test, and to implement new and consistent parameterisations in models, and
  3. to develop mathematical and numerical methods featuring consistent energetics.

Successful applicants hold a MSc or Phd degree in physical oceanography, meteorology, applied mathematics or a related field and are highly motivated to work in an interdisciplinary environment.

The Collaborative Research Center TRR 181 aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching in this field and explicitly encourages women to apply.

The openings may be situated at any of the participating institutions.

The earliest start of the positions is 1. July 2016.

Applications, including a letter of motivation and CV (pdf, one document, not more than 8 MB) should be sent in electronic form to trr181.cen[at]uni-hamburg.de . Find more information on the positions here.
